Born in 1978 of the( Taa'chii'nii and A'shii hi') lineages, Sheldon Harvey, a celebrated Navajo artist, carries forward a rich artistic heritage. Originally from Lukachukai, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, Harvey's journey began under the guidance of his uncle, Aaron Harvey, and his grandfathers, Edward and Leo Harvey, revered medicine men. Deeply rooted in Navajo traditions and inspired by creation myths and ancient stories, Harvey's art seamlessly blends traditional storytelling with contemporary creativity.

 

His mixed-media sculptures and paintings, masterfully integrating elements of cubism and expressionism, bring to life the mythical beings of the Navajo Creation Story, particularly the Air-Spirit Beings of the First World. Employing a unique palette of materials, including wood, fabric, feathers, stains, and paint, Harvey crafts intricate works that embody the essence of Navajo folk traditions.

 

Beyond his artistic practice, Harvey serves as a Art professor at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona, where he imparts his knowledge and passion for art to the next generation of Navajo artists by teaching painting and other related art courses.

Harvey's exceptional talent has garnered widespread recognition and critical acclaim.

 

His Accolades include:

  • Best in Show at the 2008 Santa Fe Indian Market for his oil painting "Trickster Ways"

  • First-place awards for sculpture and painting at the Santa Fe Indian Market
